SLPP’s Five-Year Education Report Card: Progress or Peril in Sierra Leone’s Struggling System?

By the Sierra Leone Live Team.

In 2018, the SLPP manifesto highlighted the deplorable condition of Sierra Leone’s education system, tracing its decline to the APC’s first assumption of power in 1968. The analysis of the situation revealed a bleak picture, with low enrollment rates, poor access to education, and a lack of qualified teachers at all levels.

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) was described as being neglected, whereas university education faced obstacles such as a lack of infrastructure, insufficient research facilities, and a rise in partisanship.

SLPP’s Five-Year Education Report Card: Progress or Peril in Sierra Leone’s Struggling System?

The transition from a 6-3-3-4 to a 6-3-4-4 education system had negative effects on teen pregnancy and dropout rates among females.

As Sierra Leone Live investigates the path taken by the SLPP since 2018, pertinent questions must be posed.

  1. Has the SLPP improved the education system in Sierra Leone and turned the tide?
  2. Have the initiatives launched by the SLPP government been successful in addressing the issues highlighted in their manifesto?
  3. Are there any accomplishments to be proud of?
  4. Has the SLPP increased access to education, especially for vulnerable populations and those living in remote areas?
  5. In the past five years, have teacher qualifications and training programs improved, resulting in a more qualified teaching force?
  6. Was the SLPP successful in addressing the neglect of TVET, standardizing its curriculum, and completing the National TVET Policy?
  7. Has the SLPP addressed university education’s challenges, such as poor infrastructure, insufficient research facilities, and politicization?
  8. How has the SLPP responded to the shift from 6-3-3-4 to 6-3-4-4 in the education system, and has this response been effective in reducing teen pregnancy and school dropout rates among girls?

We will examine the goals and outcomes of the SLPP’s efforts in the education sector over the past five years in greater detail.

The focus of our investigation will be on enrollment rates, access to education, teacher qualifications, improvements to TVET and university education, and the impact of the 6-3-4-4 education system on girls’ education.

Sierra Leone Live aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the SLPP’s performance in education, evaluating their policies and programs, and determining if the situation has improved since the bleak forecast presented in their 2018 manifesto.

Join us as we examine the successes and failures of the Sierra Leone People’s Party’s (SLPP) education initiatives and their impact on Sierra Leone’s future.

Sierra Leone’s Education Investment: A Five-Year Review of the SLPP Government

By the Sierra Leone Live Team.

In the 2018 SLPP manifesto, the party outlined its vision for Sierra Leone’s educational system and the crucial role it plays in fostering sustainable development.

On page 35, Part III (HUMAN DEVELOPMENT), the manifesto states,

3.1 Improving Education and Skills Training

Investing in quality education – primary, secondary, and post-secondary (including technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and university) will help transform Sierra Leone’s natural and mineral resources into sustainable development. Education is the key to individual, community and national development. Education helps lift people out of poverty and creates vast new opportunities to reduce unfair income distribution and increase choices. It creates awareness and helps to sustain democracy and peace.”

As Sierra Leone Live embarks on an in-depth analysis of the SLPP’s successes and failures during their last five years in power, we begin with an overview of their commitment to education as a catalyst for change. In the coming weeks, we will evaluate the government’s efforts, evaluate the impact of their policies, and investigate the ongoing dialogue surrounding their initiatives.

Join us as we explore the complexities of educational reform and its impact on Sierra Leone’s future.

The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) government has faced the challenge of investing in quality education in its pursuit of sustainable development and fair income distribution. Education is essential for individual and communal development, and it plays a vital role in promoting democracy and peace. Over the past five years, the SLPP has implemented several initiatives aimed at enhancing primary, secondary, and postsecondary education, as well as technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and university programs. As Sierra Leone Live investigates the performance of the SLPP, we ask: Did the government rise to the occasion? What do the All People’s Congress (APC) and others have to say about their efforts?

During its time in office, the SLPP introduced the Free Quality School Education (FQSE) program, which aimed to expand access to primary and secondary education for all children in the country. This initiative has led to a substantial increase in school enrollment, with many children from disadvantaged backgrounds gaining access to education. In addition, the government has invested in teacher training and infrastructure improvements, further enhancing the quality of education.

Recognizing their significance in transforming Sierra Leone’s natural and mineral resources into sustainable development, the SLPP has prioritized expanding TVET and university opportunities in the realm of post-secondary education. Initiatives such as the Technical and Higher Education Commission have sought to enhance the quality of higher education by bolstering regulatory frameworks, encouraging innovation, and fostering collaboration between educational institutions and industry partners.

However, critics argue these partnerships do not address systemic problems, such as low teacher salaries, obsolete teaching methods, and inadequate student resources. They argue that the government’s emphasis on access to education, while commendable, overlooks the need for comprehensive education reform to improve learning outcomes and produce a globally competitive workforce.

As the discussion surrounding the SLPP’s education initiatives continues, it is essential to acknowledge the progress made and the areas that still require improvement. The success of Sierra Leone’s education system is crucial to the country’s development, and a comprehensive understanding of the obstacles it faces is required for future policy decisions.

Sierra Leone Live encourages citizens to take an active role in shaping the future of their country’s education system by fostering open and inclusive dialogue. As we delve deeper into the SLPP’s accomplishments and shortfalls over the past five years, your input is indispensable in constructing a comprehensive understanding of the education system in Sierra Leone and Sierra Leone’s Education Investment.

Has the SLPP Delivered on Its Promises? A Closer Look at Human Development in Sierra Leone

by Bhai Dhawa Sesay

As Sierra Leone continues on its path to progress and development, doubts have arisen about the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and whether it fulfilled the pledges made in its 2018 manifesto. It is time for Sierra Leone Live (sierraleonelive.com) to uncover the truth behind the opposition’s assertions that the SLPP has fallen short of its obligations. Over the course of the following two months, we will examine the facts and determine the extent to which the SLPP has executed their policies and initiatives successfully.

The manifesto of the SLPP focuses on four key components of human development: creating human capital, enhancing education and skill development, enhancing healthcare, and safeguarding the poor and vulnerable demographic groups. As we embark on this investigation, we will examine each of these factors separately, assessing the SLPP’s performance and posing the crucial question, “Did the SLPP fulfil its promise?”

Human capital development is vital for any nation’s growth and development. We will examine the policies and programs established by the SLPP government to promote human capital development and determine if they provided incentives for training and skill development, as well as fostered entrepreneurship and creativity.

Improving education and skill development is another of the SLPP’s core promises. We will evaluate the party’s educational policy, infrastructural investments, and citizens’ access to quality education. Key considerations include whether the SLPP allocated appropriate resources to education, established relevant curricula, and guaranteed that educational institutions were adequately staffed with professionally qualified personnel.

The condition of healthcare shows human progress. To evaluate the SLPP’s progress in this area, investments in healthcare infrastructure, the availability of excellent healthcare services, and initiatives to address widespread health conditions will be analyzed. We shall inquire whether the SLPP has increased access to healthcare for all citizens and reduced gaps in healthcare outcomes across population categories.

Finally, we will evaluate the success of the SLPP in protecting poor and vulnerable demographic groups. This evaluation will evaluate the political party’s social protection measures, safety nets, and welfare programs. We will assess whether they have taken measures to eliminate poverty, combat income inequality, and guarantee vulnerable populations have access to food, shelter, and healthcare.

Over the course of the next two months, Sierra Leone Live (sierraleonelive.com) will give extensive coverage of our results, digging into the data on advancement in each area of human development. Through a comprehensive examination of the SLPP’s policies, programs, and initiatives, as well as consideration of the larger socio-economic backdrop, we will attempt to provide a transparent and objective assessment of the SLPP’s progress in meeting its commitments to human development.

As we prepare to undertake this comprehensive inquiry, we want our readers to maintain an open mind and a critical stance, questioning both the SLPP and opposition perspectives. Our aim is to create a forum for meaningful dialogue and well-informed decision-making, contributing to the growth of a wealthy Sierra Leone.

Throughout the course of our inquiry, we will engage with experts in the sectors of education, healthcare, social protection, and economics to ensure that our analysis is based on a thorough comprehension of the complexity of human growth. We will also solicit comments from ordinary citizens, whose firsthand knowledge of the effects of the SLPP’s policies and activities on the actual world is vital.

As Sierra Leone Live (sierraleonelive.com) investigates the core of this crucial subject, we acknowledge the significance of providing an environment that supports open debate and the exchange of varied viewpoints. We think that by working together, we can develop a more informed and involved populace that is better suited to face the current and future issues facing Sierra Leone.

Unwaveringly, we are committed to bringing light to the SLPP’s performance in delivering on its commitments. We are committed to presenting our readers with the most accurate, impartial, and insightful analysis possible while we conduct this extensive inquiry. Together, we will investigate the successes and failures of the SLPP’s policies and initiatives to assess their genuine impact.

Sierra Leone's Political Roosters: Should Lead the Charge for Peaceful Elections

By Bhai Dhawa Sesay

As the June 24 elections draw near, the spotlight falls on the leaders of the two major political parties in Sierra Leone: the All People’s Congress (APC) and the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP). These leaders, who are like the head roosters in cockfighting, must use their skills to get their parties ready for the election battle and make sure that the battle stays within the law. The main goal is to make sure that voting goes smoothly and that they uphold democratic values in Sierra Leone.

The rooster is a fiercely competitive and territorial bird, well known for its role in cockfighting. For a rooster to win in the arena, it needs to be both physically and mentally strong. Similarly, the leaders of the APC and SLPP need to gather their resources and motivate their followers for the upcoming elections. However, unlike the sport of cockfighting, the political roosters in Sierra Leone must navigate their way to success while ensuring peace and stability throughout the nation.

In the red corner, representing the APC is a leader who has displayed determination and resilience in the face of adversity. His supporters like him because he has a strong commitment to social justice and fair growth. He has shown repeatedly that he can bring the party faithful together and keep them together, just like a head rooster commands respect from the other roosters.

In the green corner, representing the SLPP, is a leader who has shown an uncanny ability to adapt to changing political circumstances. This political rooster has shown that he knows a lot about how politics work in the country. This gives him the ability to make strategic alliances and outsmart his opponents. Because of his charisma and ability to speak well, he has won over a wide range of supporters. This has helped the SLPP stay a powerful force in Sierra Leonean politics.

Even though both leaders have the skills, they need to be successful in politics; it is important that they use their natural competitiveness in a way that promotes peace, unity, and the rule of law. To do this, they can learn from some key characteristics of the rooster, which can be helpful in preventing any fighting and ensuring a peaceful voting process.

Sierra Leone's Political Roasters- Leading the Charge for Peaceful Elections

Vigilance: Roosters are known for always keeping an eye on their surroundings to protect their home. The political leaders must keep a close eye on what their supporters and members of the other party do and act quickly to deal with any potential problems or violations of election laws.

Communication: Roosters use a variety of vocalizations to convey messages to their flock. In the same way, the leaders of both the APC and the SLPP must keep clear and open lines of communication with their supporters. They must stress how important it is to take part in the election process peacefully and condemn any kind of violence.

Courage: Roosters are fearless birds, willing to face danger head-on. The leaders of the APC and SLPP must exhibit courage in standing up against any attempts to undermine the democratic process, encouraging their supporters to do the same.

Discipline: In the world of cockfighting, a well-trained rooster knows when to fight and when to walk away. The political rivals must teach discipline to their supporters and make sure they know the limits of political competition and follow the laws that govern how elections are run.

As the countdown to the June 24 elections begins, the leaders of the APC and SLPP, like head roosters, must use their skills to prepare for the political fight ahead. By embodying the characteristics of a rooster and encouraging their supporters to do the same, they can help create an environment that is conducive to all.

Sierra Leone Wrestling Match Turns Political Battleground Ahead of June 24 Elections

Two local guys from opposing political parties are involved in a fierce wrestling fight in the center of Sierra Leone, which has captured the attention of the entire country. As the country gets closer to the crucial June 24 elections, the show, which has gathered throngs of men, women, and children, has taken on a deeper meaning.

The first man is a strong supporter of the All People’s Congress (APC). He wears red shorts and looks determined to win the battle. His rival, a devoted supporter of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), is just sporting a pair of green shorts and is equally determined to win. Their facial expressions and body language convey the intense competition between their separate parties, as well as the high stakes of the game.

The crowd cheers, dances, and claps to support their chosen political party as the wrestlers compete for supremacy. There is a sense of expectation in the air, as though the conclusion of the wrestling bout could foretell the fate of the impending elections. Many people question if the country is indeed getting ready for a “Vote Not Fight” campaign because the barriers between politics and sport have become increasingly blurred.

High-ranking politicians from both parties have attended the event, heightening the excitement as they hope to see their candidate win. But, as they watch the bout take place, the politicians appear to be more focused on the bragging rights that a victory would bring to their tribe, political party, or region than on the destiny of the individual wrestlers.

This wrestling match, which represents the political atmosphere in Sierra Leone, raises concerns about the influence of regionalism and tribalism on the nation’s politics. Sierra Leoneans are being urged to set aside their differences in order to ensure a peaceful transfer of power as the country gets closer to its elections on June 24.

The enthusiasm of the fans and the intensity of the wrestling battle, however, show that obstacles may lie in the way of achieving oneness. This incident stirred up a lot of anger, which is a stark reminder of how deeply divided the country’s political scene still is.

It would be interesting to watch if teamwork and fair play will win out as the game nears its conclusion, providing a good example of the impending elections. Sierra Leoneans are keeping a close eye on what’s going on, hoping that a peaceful end will help their country move forward.

The wrestling match is ultimately more than just a contest between two men; it is a symbol of the nation’s quest for peace, cohesion, and advancement. The aim is that the lessons acquired from this amazing event would spark a new age of political stability and harmony in the country as Sierra Leoneans cry “Vote Not Fight” and “Let peace reign.”

Chinese Two Sessions Lay out the Blueprint For the Future and Bring New Opportunities for China-Sierra Leone Relations.

China-Salone Flag

by Wang Qing, Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone

The National People’s Congress(NPC)and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which are the annual Chinese sessions, have just been concluded in Beijing. The two sessions have always been an important window to understand China. The “highlights” of this year’s two sessions were as follows:

The Two Sessions are an important window to show a clear picture of the whole-process of people’s democracy in China. In the modern states, The People as Masters of the Country cannot be a “lofty” political slogan. We need to achieve democracy with practical institutional arrangements and measure it in the country’s political and social life. The 2,977 deputies to the 14th NPC are from various industries and places across the country and the 2,169 CPPCC members from 34 sectors basically cover all areas of society. Through the platform of the two sessions, public opinions can reach the “top” from the “bottom”. The international community vividly compares the two sessions of China as the process of “consensus building”, where the “big issues of the country” are closely linked to the “small issues” of people’s livelihoods, and the “what the people want” resonates with the “what the party and the government do”.

The party’s proposition for the national will, and the people’s voice are highly unified. The first session of the 14th National People’s Congress elected the new Leadership of China. Xi Jinping was unanimously voted as President of China and Chairman of the People’s Republic of China Central Military Commission, which fully reflects the common will of the Party, the armed forces, and the Chinese people of all ethnic groups. This also fully embodies the high degree of unity between the will of the Party, the people and the state. It is what the Party and the people hope for.

The Two Sessions are an important window to see China’s development prospects. Over the past five years, in the face of multiple shocks that exceeded expectations, China has withstood the test and achieved a five-year average annual growth rate of 5.2%, increasing its GDP to about 18 trillion US Dollars and continuing to be an important engine of growth for the world economy.

However, China’s development is still unbalanced and inadequate. Currently, our development is focused on providing for people’s basic needs. Going forward, the focus will be shifted toward delivering a life of better quality for the people. In particular, we will enhance our capacity for scientific and technological innovations, build a modern industrial system, and transit toward green development.

The Two Sessions particularly emphasized the importance of high-quality development and put forward a series of specific initiatives. The target of GDP growth of around 5%, which China proposed is in line with economic laws and realistic requirements, and also demonstrates China’s firm determination to promote high-quality development. Although the world’s economic situation this year is generally not optimistic and there are still many unstable, uncertain and unpredictable factors, China will take a number of actions such as optimizing macro policies, expanding demand, advancing reform and innovation, and preventing and defusing risks, so as to inject new impetus to the global economy with its own high-quality development and create more opportunities for the world.

To sum up, like Chinese new Premier Li Qiang said, the prospect of Chinese economy will break winds and waves, and sail toward a brighter future.

The Two Sessions are an important window to comprehensively understand China’s foreign policy. At the press conference of the two sessions, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang comprehensively explained China’s foreign policy, stressing that China will continue to implement the mutually beneficial strategy of opening-up and always be a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a defender of the international order.

What is happening in the world today? What should we do? Humanity is once again standing at the crossroads of history. China’s answer is clear. We will build on our extensive partnerships to promote a new type of international relations. We will take openness and development as our objective. We will facilitate high-quality development and high-standard opening-up. We will uphold an open and inclusive world economy, and will generate new opportunities for the world with our new development. We will take multilateralism as the way forward. We will promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, make global governance more just and equitable. We will offer more, better Chinese insight and solutions to help meet humanity’s common challenges.

At present, With the COVID situation turning for the better in China, we’re steadily resuming exchanges with the world. We’ve pressed the “acceleration button”, and sounded the clarion call for our diplomacy. Not long ago, China released the “The Global Security Initiative Concept Paper” and “China’s Position on the Political Settlement of the Ukraine Crisis ” , exploring solutions to both the symptoms and the root causes of international security challenges and showing China’s responsibility for maintaining world peace. During the two sessions, Saudi Arabia and Iran announced the restoration of diplomatic relations under the active mediation of China, which is a successful practice of the Global Security Initiative and sets a model for regional countries to resolve conflicts and differences through dialogue and consultation. This year marks the 10th anniversary of China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative, Over the past decade, the BRI has galvanized nearly US$1 trillion of investment, established more than 3,000 cooperation projects, created 420,000 local jobs, and helped lift almost 40 million people out of poverty. China will host the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation this year. Taking this as an opportunity, we will work with all relevant parties for more fruitful outcomes from Belt and Road cooperation.

The Two Sessions have sent out rich signals, giving the world a sense of a confident and down-to-earth China. Looking ahead to 2023, it will be a very important year for China’s development, as well as for China-Sierra Leone and China-Africa relations. China is willing to work with Sierra Leone to strengthen high-level contacts, deepen exchanges and cooperation, and promote new progress in the China-Sierra Leone Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership, so that the people of our two countries can benefit more from China-Sierra Leone practical cooperation and create a bright new era in our bilateral relations together.

International Women's Day: Empowering Women in Sierra Leone; Moving Beyond Equal Opportunities to Embrace Equity and Inclusion on International Women's Day
Loading
/

International Women’s Day is today, March 8, 2023, a day set aside to recognize the accomplishments of women worldwide and to raise awareness of the obstacles they still have to overcome. Women in Sierra Leone keep fighting for equality and self-determination, even though institutional barriers and bias keep them from reaching their full potential. As we celebrate this day, it is important that we talk about the problems that women in Sierra Leone face and look for ways to fix them.

Equal Opportunities Aren’t Enough.

Although opportunities for women have improved in Sierra Leone, these opportunities do not result in equal outcomes. Even though the law protects women from being treated unfairly, there are many things that keep them from fully taking part in society. For instance, women are more likely to work in low-paying positions and are underrepresented in leadership roles in both the public and commercial sectors. Also, women in Sierra Leone are more likely than men to not be able to read or write, and they are more likely to be poor.

Embrace Equity.

Prioritizing equity over equality is important if we are to effectively solve these inequalities. While equality tries to give everyone the same opportunities and resources, equity considers that people may have different needs and experiences and therefore need different help. Promoting equity will help overcome the difficulties faced by women in Sierra Leone and build a more inclusive and just society.

Gender Stereotypes.

Women in Sierra Leone still have to deal with gender stereotypes that limit their opportunities and make the gap between men and women bigger. These biases are deeply rooted in society, and it’s hard to get rid of them. It is essential to question them and advance a more inclusive and varied understanding of gender roles. Women in Sierra Leone may benefit from a level playing field because of this.

International Women's Day - Women in Sierra Leone

Call Out Discrimination.

Women experience discrimination in education, the workplace, and other areas of their lives where it is a common occurrence. It is important to point out this discrimination and look for help in addressing it. This could help make the environment for women safer and more inclusive.

Draw Attention to Bias.

Unconscious bias might negatively impact women’s opportunities and experiences in subtle and cunning ways. It’s important to call attention to these prejudices and attempt to overcome them in order to address this. This may entail educating people about unconscious bias and providing resources and training to aid individuals in identifying and overcoming their biases.

Seek Inclusion.

Women must be represented in all aspects of society if we are to build a more just and inclusive country. This involves strengthening the participation of women in the political, social, economic, and cultural sectors. Increasing women’s access to education and training, encouraging women to take on leadership roles and take part in decision-making, and making workplaces friendlier could all be ways to reach this goal.

Government’s Efforts to Empower Women.

The government has taken measures to increase women’s rights and gender equality, including upholding such values in the constitution. On the ground, these initiatives are often not carried out successfully, though. It is important to ensure that these policies are fully put into practice and that resources are allocated to promoting women’s equality and empowerment.

International Women's Day - Women in Sierra Leone

The Right to Vote and take part in Governance.

In order to build a society that is more just and equitable, women must have the right to vote and take part in governance. Women now hold important leadership positions in the government and civil society in Sierra Leone, a country that has gained progress in this regard. To guarantee that women’s opinions are heard and that we respect their perspectives throughout decision-making processes, however, more must be done.

The Right to Access Digital Literacy.

Access to digital literacy is essential for women’s empowerment in a world that continues to grow increasingly digital. Women in Sierra Leone have substantial barriers when seeking digital training and services. By making it easier for women to get digital training and resources, we can help them do better in life and encourage them to fully take part in society.

Conclusion.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s important to think about the problems women in Sierra Leone face and make a promise to make things better. Even though there’s been progress, much work needs to be done before women are empowered and given the opportunity to realize their full potential. We can make Sierra Leone a more fair and just place for all women by embracing equity, challenging gender stereotypes, speaking out against discrimination and bias, working for inclusion, supporting government efforts to empower women, promoting the right to vote and take part in government, and giving more people access to digital literacy.

It’s important for women to keep striving to advance themselves and their rights, but it is also important for society to respect and support their efforts. Let’s celebrate the achievements of women in Sierra Leone on this International Women’s Day and pledge to work toward a time when all women can succeed and realize their full potential. We can only create a society where women are truly equal and empowered by working together.

Election Violence in Sierra Leone: How to Ensure a Peaceful and Fair Vote.

By Bhai-Dhawa Sesay; March 4, 2023.

The small West African nation of Sierra Leone is getting ready for its next general elections on June 24, 2023. Election violence, however, has a history in the country and has tainted previous elections. Fair and peaceful elections are important for Sierra Leone’s stability, growth, and the well-being of its people. In this post, I’ll look at the reasons behind the violence that stained the previous elections and what we may do to prevent it in the future.

Election violence in Sierra Leone: Underlying Reasons

There are several historical, political, economic, and social factors that can be linked to the violence in Sierra Leone’s elections. In the past, the country has had a lot of political trouble, including a civil war that lasted from 1991 to 2002. Extreme violence, like using children as soldiers, cutting off limbs, and raping, was the norm during the war. The effects of the civil war are still being felt today, and they have helped to create a culture of violence in the country.

Political factors also have a significant impact on election violence in Sierra Leone. The All People’s Congress (APC) and the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) are the two main political parties in the country. Because of their rivalry, there has been a lot of violence between these two parties, especially during election season. Lack of transparency and accountability in the election process has also made people feel like they are being treated unfairly, which has led to election violence.

Economic factors also play a role in electoral violence. One of the highest rates of unemployment and poverty in the entire world. Youth are often involved in election violence because they don’t have enough work opportunities.

Things like tribalism and regionalism also affect the violence that happens during elections. Around 16 different ethnic groups are in the country, each with its own language and culture. When people think the political process is unfair, it often leads to violence along tribal and regional lines.

Effects of Election Violence in Sierra Leone

The violence that happened during the elections has had a big effect on Sierra Leone’s government, society, and economy. Violence during elections makes the voting process less legitimate, which makes people lose faith in the democratic system. It creates an atmosphere of fear and intimidation that makes people less likely to speak out or get involved in politics.

Election-related violence has a big influence on society. It can cause damage to property and people’s lives, as well as long-term splits in the community. Violence at an election can have devastating effects on people’s minds, leaving them with trauma, anxiety, and depression if they were there or saw it.

The economic effects of electoral violence are also substantial. It may cause the destruction of businesses and infrastructure and discourage foreign investment. This may make Sierra Leone’s economic challenges much worse.

Strategies to Guarantee a Fair and Peaceful Election

We can do several things to make sure that the elections are peaceful and fair. Promoting peaceful elections requires a focus on awareness-raising and education. Voter education may foster a culture of nonviolence and help citizens understand their rights and obligations. The importance of democratic values like free and fair elections can be better understood by citizens with the aid of civic education.

In order to guarantee fair and peaceful elections, security measures are also essential. The police and military can help stop violence and make sure that the elections are safe and secure. We can also use technology, like electronic voting machines, to make sure that the voting process is clear and reliable.

With the help of international observers and support, we can also make sure the elections are peaceful and fair. International groups like the African Union, the European Union, and the United Nations can help with technical and financial issues and can also send observers to monitor the voting process. During the election season, security and stability may also depend on help from countries close by.

Conclusion

In conclusion, a free and fair election is very important for the stability and growth of Sierra Leone. Although the causes of election violence are many, historical, political, economic, and social variables might be involved. Violence during an election has a lot of bad effects on the country’s democracy, society, and economy. Still, there are things we can do, like taking security precautions, having foreign observers, and getting help to make sure that the elections are free and fair.

The government and civil society must work together to make sure that June 24, 2023, elections are fair and peaceful and to promote a culture of nonviolence and democratic values throughout the country’s political process.

APC’s Search for a Running Mate: Ensuring Fairness and Transparency in the Selection Process Amidst the Ongoing Trial of Samura Kamara.

By Bhai Dhawa Sesay; March 2, 2023.

When a political party’s presidential candidate chooses a running mate, they have to think carefully about several factors. These include the rule of law, how reliable the candidates are, and whether they might have hidden agendas or be rude. The All People’s Congress (APC) in Sierra Leone is currently choosing a running mate, which is crucial because Samura Kamara is currently being tried and might be removed from the race.

It is crucial for the party to choose a candidate who competed for the position of flag-bearer during the convention in order to guarantee a fair and open process. This will make sure that the party stays true to its commitment to democratic and legal values and that the running mate chosen is a reliable and trustworthy person.

In the selection process, each candidate’s credentials, history, and fit with the presidential candidate’s platform and goals should be carefully looked at.

In the end, a campaign’s success comes down to choosing a running mate who can improve the presidential candidate’s skills, appeal to a wide range of voters, and help win the election.

When choosing a running mate for the All People’s Congress (APC), the following things could be done:

  1. Choose the criteria:

The APC may look for someone with a strong history of public service, possibly in the government or in civil society, in terms of experience and credentials. The party might also look at a candidate’s education and work history, as well as any relevant skills in the legal, business, or other fields.

The region could also be a factor since the party might want a running mate who can help them get more support in certain parts of the country. The party may also think about how well the running mate fits with the presidential candidate’s platform and personality, as well as how well ethnicity and gender are represented.

  1. Research Potential Candidates:

The party may consider people who have held executive positions in the past or who have held other leadership positions, as well as people who have shown leadership in business, academia, or civil society organizations. Together with candidates who are well-liked by the wider populace, the APC may also seek candidates who have a significant base of support within the party.

  1. The Political Environment:

The APC might also think about the political situation in Sierra Leone, especially the most important problems and difficulties the country is facing right now, as well as the voters’ top priorities.

The party may want to choose someone who can help tackle some of the critical problems the nation is currently facing, such as poverty, unemployment, and corruption. The party may also wish to select a running mate who can win over a variety of voters and broaden their base of support.

  1. Consult with Advisors:

To gather their opinions on potential running mates and their potential influence on the campaign, the APC presidential candidate may consult with advisors, including political strategists, party officials, and other trusted experts.

These advisers might give useful information about the pros and cons of possible running mates and how they might appeal to certain groups of voters.

  1. Interview and Screen Candidates:

The APC may interview prospective candidates to learn more about them and see whether their policies and the presidential candidates are a good fit. The party may also investigate each candidate’s background, financial situation, and potential liabilities.

The party could want to make sure the running mate is free of controversies and other potential liabilities that could harm the campaign.

  1. Make a Choice:

After considering the criteria, research, consultations, and vetting process, the APC should finally decide. The presidential candidate should pick a running mate who can strengthen them, counteract their weaknesses, and aid in their electoral success.

Conclusion:

To choose a running mate for the All People’s Congress (APC) presidential candidate, criteria must be set, potential candidates must be researched, the political climate must be taken into account, advisors must be consulted, candidates must be interviewed and screened, and a decision must be made. When making this choice, the party must pay close attention to the rule of law, the dependability of the candidates, and any possibility of untruthfulness or hidden objectives.

Considering Samura Kamara’s ongoing prosecution, the APC must choose a running mate who ran for flag bearer at the convention. This will show how committed they are to democracy and fairness. The likelihood that the party will win the election will increase, as will the party’s commitment to democratic values and a thorough and transparent selection process for a qualified candidate.

Political Worship and Poor Leadership: The Case of Sierra Leone's Grassroots People and Politicians

Politics has always been an important part of human societies. Politicians have made campaign promises to get votes and keep their jobs. Politicians are known to have a high level of political worship among grassroots people. Political worship can take many forms, including loyalty, support, admiration, and even devotion to a specific politician.

The question then becomes, “Why do ordinary citizens worship politicians?” The answer to this question is based on the need for political representation and leadership, the desire for change and growth, and the fact that politicians are a source of income for many people.

This report will look at why grassroots people worship politicians, using Sierra Leone as an example. It will also look at dictators’ roles as politicians, the significance of controlling the flow of funds, and stealing from the poor to give to the rich. The report also talks about how foreign aid can help corrupt politicians stay in power, as well as the political and economic effects of aid. Last, the report looks at how President Julius Maada Bio and former President Ernest Bai Koroma led Sierra Leone.

Leadership and Political Representation

The need for political representation and leadership is one reason grassroots people worship politicians. Politicians are often seen as the voice of the people, and they are expected to look out for their constituents’ best interests. This is especially important for marginalized and disadvantaged groups, which may not have a voice in the political process. In Sierra Leone, for example, most people live in rural areas, and they often feel like the political elite in Freetown, the country’s capital, don’t care about them. As a result, they frequently rely on local politicians for representation and leadership.

The Desire for Change and Development

The desire for change and development is another reason grassroots people worship politicians. Corruption, nepotism, and incompetence plague the political systems of many developing countries. As a result, there has been little development and a high level of poverty, particularly in rural areas, where many people look to politicians for change and advancement. People often think of politicians who promise to bring about change and development as messiahs.

In Sierra Leone, for example, President Julius Maada Bio was elected on a platform of change and development. He is popular with the people on the ground, in part because he promised to raise the standard of living in the country.

Reliance on Politicians as a Source of Livelihood

Finally, grassroots people worship politicians because they rely on them for a living. Because the government is often the largest employer in many developing countries, many people rely on government jobs for a living. As a result, politicians have a significant impact on the lives of their constituents. Politicians who are seen as helping their constituents often get their loyalty and political worship. In Sierra Leone, for example, politicians often use their power to get government jobs and contracts for their supporters. This makes the people feel like they owe them something.

The Political Role of Dictators

Dictators are rulers who use brute force to maintain control over their subjects. They maintain power through intimidation and violence, control the media, and silence dissent. Despite the negative consequences of dictatorship, some people continue to idolize dictators. This is because dictators often promise stability and security at the cost of freedom and democracy.

People thought that Sierra Leone’s former President Siaka Stevens was a dictator who was liked by the people. From 1967 to 1985, he ruled the country with an iron fist. He was well-known for his “one-party state” policy, which effectively ended democracy in the country. He also had full control over the media, and people who didn’t agree with him were often killed or put in jail. Even though he ruled by force, many people on the ground saw him as a powerful leader who kept things stable.

Controlling the Flow of Funds

Politicians need to control the flow of funds because it gives them power and influence. Politicians with control over the flow of funds can decide who gets what, giving them an advantage over others. They can reward their supporters while punishing their opponents, ensuring their power.

Politicians are known to control the flow of funds in Sierra Leone. For example, when Ebola broke out in 2014, the government was given money to help fight the disease. Later, though, it was discovered that politicians had stolen some of the money. This shows that politicians can wield considerable power by controlling the flow of funds.

Giving to the Rich while stealing from the Poor

Stealing from the poor and giving to the rich is a prerequisite for becoming a top politician. This is because politicians need money to stay in power and hold on to their influence. They often use public money to make money for themselves by giving contracts to friends and family and getting richer at the expense of the poor.

Both former President Ernest Bai Koroma and current President Maada Bio have been accused of taking money from the government. This shows how politicians in Sierra Leone frequently use public funds for personal gain.

Foreign Aid’s Role in Enabling Bad Political Leaders

Foreign aid is critical for many developing countries, but it can be a two-edged sword. On the one hand, aid can help reduce poverty, encourage growth, and help people in crisis. Aid can also help corrupt politicians stay in power by giving them a steady flow of money that they can use for their own benefit.

Foreign aid has been criticized in Sierra Leone for enabling bad political leaders. Politicians have used aid to enrich themselves at the expense of the poor. As a result, there is a lack of accountability and transparency in the allocation of aid funds.

Aid’s Political and Economic Implications

Aid can have significant political and economic consequences. On the political front, aid can undermine democracy by bolstering corrupt political leaders. Aid can also foster a dependency culture in which the government relies on aid rather than developing its own revenue sources.

Aid has the potential to distort markets and stifle economic growth. Aid can be used, for example, to subsidize local industries, making it difficult for other industries to compete. As a result, there may be a lack of diversification and long-term economic growth.

Sierra Leone’s recent presidents

During his presidency, they accused Ernest Bai Koroma of poor leadership. He was accused of stealing public funds, undermining democracy, and silencing opposition voices. His administration was chastised for being authoritarian and corrupt.

President Julius Maada Bio, who took office in 2018, has also been accused of ineffective leadership. His administration has been chastised for a lack of transparency and accountability, as well as for failing to address poverty and unemployment. His critics have also accused him of using force to silence critics.

Conclusion

Finally, grassroots people worship politicians for a variety of reasons, including a desire for political representation and leadership, a desire for change and development, and a reliance on politicians as a source of income. Despite their reputation for poor governance, the masses worship dictators.

People think that you have to control the flow of money, steal from the poor, and give to the rich to be a top politician. Foreign aid can give corrupt politicians more power, which can slow down development and make poverty worse. Aid can have significant political and economic consequences.

The cases of former President Ernest Bai Koroma and current President Julius Maada Bio show the problems that developing countries face and how important good governance and good leadership are. Accountability, transparency, and a commitment to democratic values are required to address this issue.

Only then will Sierra Leoneans have leaders who really look out for their best interests and help them grow.
